The Conch Republic celebrated the 26th anniversary of its 1982 secession from the Union in fine style this past weekend. Snapper's Restaurant in Key Largo, designated The Keeper of the Flame of the Northernmost Territory of the Conch Republic, held its annual celebration over 4 days with numerous events. Last Thursday night kicked off the weekend with a Jimmy Buffet Impersonator Contest and entertainment by the one and only Dangerous Dave Merrill. Friday night saw the election of the Conch King & Queen. Saturday, there was a Classic Keys Cruiser auto contest, and Sunday brought us the Key Lime Pie Eating Contest, the Conchshell Horn Blowing Contest and the annual "Blowing Up The Bridge" event, when a replica of the Jewfish Creek Drawbridge (the Keys' northernmost bridge) is ceremoniously exploded in the restaurant's parking lot! A joyful noise was created by the many folks in attendance, and lots of fun was had by all. Conch Republic flags were flying everywhere, the sky was blue with a gentle sea breeze blowing -- we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day to celebrate in Paradise!

Celebrations are held throughout the Keys, from Key West to Key Largo during the last weekend in April each year, so mark your calendars and join us next year when we get all Keyed Up and Conched Out!
